What has Prince Andrew said about his relationship with Ghislaine Maxwell?

With Jeffrey Epstein’s ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell having been arrested on charges of sex abuse and exploitation of minors, the spotlight is again firmly affixed to their former mutual friend, Prince Andrew.

Maxwell has been accused of helping Epstein find girls to ‘work’ for him on multiple occasions.

Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was made to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17 years old, told Newsnight in 2019 that Maxwell had first offered her a job as Epstein’s a masseuse.

In a different and now-infamous interview with Emily Maitlis for Newsnight, the Prince went into detail about his former friendships with both Epstein and Maxwell, stating that it was his relationship with the latter that led him to interact with the former…

Prince Andrew’s friendship with Ghislaine Maxwell
The Prince stated in the now-TV Bafta Award-nominated interview that he met Epstein through Maxwell in 1999.

He then said he’d known Maxwell since she was studying at Oxford University.

Later in the interview, when Maitlis quizzed the Prince on the fact that Epstein was a guest at Windsor Castle and Sandringham in 2000, he replied: ‘Remember that it was his girlfriend that was the key element in this. [Epstein] was the, as it were, plus one.’

Maitlis then said: ‘During these times that he was a guest at Windsor Castle, at Sandringham, the shooting weekend, we now know that he was and had been procuring underage girls for sex trafficking.’

The Prince replied: ‘We now know that. At the time there was no indication to me or anybody else that that was what he was doing.

‘Certainly, when I saw him, there was no incidation.’

The Newsnight interview, which was described at the time as ‘nuclear explosion level bad’, also saw the Duke of York tell Maitlis he could not have had sex with the Giuffre because he had taken daughter Princess Beatrice to a Pizza Express in Woking on that specific date.

When told how Guiffre had been ‘very specific’ when describing him that night, claiming he was ‘profusely sweating’, the Duke of York told Maitlis there was a ‘slight problem’ with that story – claiming that at that time, he was unable to perspire.

Giuffre has alleged that Maxwell and Epstein abused her from their very first encounter after she was offered a job as Epstein’s masseuse, with Maxwell allegedly later telling her she had to ‘do for Andrew what I do for Jeffrey’ when she met the Prince.

In response to the allegations, Maxwell previously claimed Giuffre was lying which caused the victim to launch a defamation suit against her in 2015.

Maxwell has continuously denied all allegations of wrong-doing against her. The Prince has since retired from royal duties.
